Season 65-97 F

The Diamondbacks were not expected to contend, and they did not disappoint. They were last .500 at 5-5, last as high as 3rd place on May 1st, achieved last place on May 9th and were never out of the cellar again. Ian Kennedy, their best starter, was the WORST starter in MLB just two years ago. Kind of says it all.

Hitters 67-95 F

They had three four hitters, Kelly Johnson (2B), Stephen Drew (SS), Chris Young (CF) and Justin Upton (RF). All are young and form a potential core of a real team.

Starters 86.5-75.5 B-

The rotation wasn’t too bad, actually. Kennedy (still only 25) was actually pretty great, and 23-year-old Daniel Hudson was phenomenal in a dozen starts. Only Rodrigo Lopez was over 30, so there is promise there  for the future.

Bullpen -10/454 F-

I am not sure how many minuses to attach to that F, but this bullpen was historically bad. They were a full run worse than the next-to-worst bullpen, and THAT’S bad. When your most valuable bullpen piece has a value of 14 and a rating of B-, well, you really want to stay with those young starters! And when that key piece is Aaron Heilman, who is a reject from a bad Mets team, well, blowing up the pen and starting over seems like a great idea.
