As promised, I have finished doing the mid-season report cards. The grading scale
remains the same (A++ thru F) like a school report card, but the methodology
has changed somewhat, as discussed in a previous post.

Basically, I have adjusted the rating scale for the new run environment (but NOT
park-adjusted) – I did this in such a way that for each of the three areas
evaluated – hitting, starters and bullpen – the majors as a whole are graded C.
I did NOT do this league-by-league: National League pitching will show as a
little better, and hitting a little worse, because their pitchers hit.

For those who care for the details, I had to consider 4 runs scored as 3/4 of a win
for the hitters, up from 1/2 win just last season (it was 1/4 before that, and
5 was only 3/4), in order to normalize for the lower run scoring that we have
seen this year. And now game scores (the basis for starting pitcher evaluation)
also needed to be upgraded: you need a 62 to earn a full win. I have also
scaled it more precisely – each GS point from 43-61 earns .05 of a win, so a 43
is .05 and a 61 is .95. This both recenters the stat and also fixes the guys
that were being hurt by being just below 50, or helped by being just above 50.

The biggest change was the relievers, as there are many, many more effective
outings this year than in the past, so that scale had to adjusted quite a lot.
A performance that would have earned an A in years’ past, 2/3 effective and 1/3
ineffective, is now a straight B. Again, the intent was to take the rate of
Effective, Ineffective, yikes and YIKES! for the majors as a whole and have
them rate out at exactly a C.

Overall I am pleased with the results. I here publish the summary table, with grades
for actual record, hitters, starters and relievers. The player-by-player detail
may or may not follow: it is a bunch of work to format it (I HAVE the data) and
get it posted in the right places, and I am not sure anyone cares.
